The name "Ahr" derives from the Celtic word "Aha" for water. Here, it carves its way into the Ahr Mountains through a deep and steep gorge with rugged cliffs and clefts. This is not only a wildly romantic and picturesque sight, but also the basis for the cultivation of red wine in the "far north" of viticulture. Even the Romans settled here due to the special climatic conditions offered by the Ahr Valley, with its steep slopes optimally inclined to sunlight.

The region lies in the rain shadow of the Eifel and the High Fens, which means we enjoy more hours of sunshine throughout the year. All of this contributes to an almost Mediterranean climate in summer – perfect for the perfect ripening of red grape varieties. This is why the Ahr is the third-smallest wine-growing region in Germany, yet the largest contiguous area for red wine production.

The majority of our vineyards are located in Dernau, with additional plots in the municipalities of Neuenahr, Ahrweiler, and Walporzheim. The top vineyards of Pfarrwingert, Kräuterberg, Sonnenberg, and Silberberg are among the finest in Germany, boasting exceptional geological and climatic conditions and are classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®. These produce the finest wines with complex flavors, expressive site character, and exceptional aging potential. Dry wines from VDP.GROSSER LAGE® are designated VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS®.

Pinot Noir, in particular, is capable of reflecting these very special and individual terroirs with extreme character, sometimes emphasizing fruit and fullness, while at other times it is more herbal spiciness and minerality. Our sole task in the cellar is then to sensitively preserve and develop these individual characteristics.
