Domaine Mittnacht Frères: Pure Expression of the Alsace Terroir
Located in the charming village of Hunawihr, Domaine Mittnacht Frères has been a family-run pillar of Alsatian winemaking since 1963. Today, the estate is led by Marc Mittnacht, his wife Paule, and their son Pierre, who manage 11 hectares of prime vineyards scattered across Hunawihr and Ribeauvillé.
Why This Estate Stands Out
-
Biodynamic Pioneers: Domaine Mittnacht was one of the very first estates in Alsace to convert to biodynamic viticulture, earning its official certification in 1999.
-
Minimalist Winemaking: The family follows a "hands-off" philosophy in the cellar, utilizing indigenous yeasts and neutral vessels—ranging from century-old oak fuders to clay amphorae—to let the specific mineral character of each plot shine.
-
Gastronomic Focus: These wines are designed for the table. By avoiding excessive alcohol and residual sugar, the estate produces Rieslings and Pinot Gris with striking "verticality"—a combination of laser-like acidity and deep, savory texture.
The Terroir & Key Sites
The estate’s parcels are characterized by deep Muschelkalk (shelled limestone) and marl-limestone soils, which contribute a signature flinty minerality and tension to the wines.
-
Grand Cru Rosacker: Home to some of their oldest vines, producing powerful, age-worthy Rieslings.
-
Grand Cru Osterberg: Located in neighboring Ribeauvillé, known for producing wines with great finesse and aromatic complexity.
-
Lieu-Dit Muehlforst: A high-quality site that yields complex, fruit-driven expressions of Riesling and Gewurztraminer.
