Sons of Eden: The Mastery of the Two Valleys
Established in 2000, Sons of Eden is the brainchild of two Barossa "sons"—winemaker Corey Ryan and viticulturist Simon Cowham. After refining their crafts at legendary estates like Henschke and Yalumba, the duo joined forces to produce small-batch wines that bridge the gap between the power of the Barossa Valley and the elegance of the Eden Valley.
The winery is a consistent James Halliday 5-red-star producer and is widely considered one of the most successful independent labels in Australia today.
The "Viticulture First" Partnership
The success of Sons of Eden lies in the synergy between the vineyard and the cellar.
-
Simon Cowham (Viticulture): Simon manages over 30 unique vineyard sites across the region. His focus is on sustainable farming and maintaining handshake agreements with generational growers who own some of the Barossa’s most treasured old vines.
-
Corey Ryan (Winemaking): Corey brings a "big picture" perspective from his time as a global consultant. His style is often described as "big Pinot," focusing on building a slippery, refined texture and aromatic lift into the naturally robust fruit of the Barossa.
Terroir: Barossa vs. Eden
Sons of Eden is unique for its balanced mastery of both major sub-regions.
-
Barossa Valley (The Power): Sourcing from lower-altitude, warmer sites, these wines focus on the rich, plush, and earthy profile that made the region world-famous.
-
Eden Valley (The Finesse): Sourcing from high-altitude, cool-climate sites, these wines emphasize perfume, spice, and crystalline acidity.
The Wine Collection
The wines are often named after figures from Greek and Roman mythology, reflecting their distinct personalities.
-
Romulus & Remus (Old Vine Shiraz): These two wines represent the "twin" valleys. Romulus is the Barossa expression—bold, concentrated, and opulent—while Remus is the Eden Valley counterpart—spicy, floral, and elegant.
-
Zephyrus Shiraz: A signature blend of both Barossa and Eden Valley fruit, often including a small percentage of Viognier. It is celebrated for its exceptional balance and was awarded "Best in Show" at the Decanter World Wine Awards.
-
Freya Riesling: A benchmark Eden Valley Riesling. Known for its steely precision, citrus blossom aromatics, and incredible aging potential. The 2025 vintage has already received early acclaim for its vibrant purity.
-
Kennedy GSM: A classic Rhône-style blend (Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvèdre) that focuses on approachable, fleshy red fruit and savory spice.
