Laurenz V.: The Global Ambassador of Grüner Veltliner
Founded in 2004, Laurenz V. (pronounced "Laurenz Five") is a mission-driven Austrian estate with a singular focus: establishing Grüner Veltliner as one of the world's premier white wine varieties. The winery was established by Lenz Maria Moser V—the fifth generation of Austria's most famous winemaking dynasty—alongside partners Dieter Hübler and the Schweiger family.
The Legacy of "Grandpa Grüner"
The estate’s name pays tribute to Lenz’s grandfather, Lenz Moser III, affectionately known as "Grandpa Grüner." In the 1920s, he revolutionized Austrian viticulture by inventing the Lenz Moser Hochkultur (high-culture) trellising system. This innovation made Grüner Veltliner easier to cultivate and eventually propelled it to become Austria's signature grape.
Terroir: The Heart of Kamptal
While the sales office is in Vienna, the winemaking soul of Laurenz V. is in the Kamptal region of Lower Austria.
-
Dual River Banks: They utilize the distinct soils of the River Kamp. The right bank’s clay and loess provide creaminess and length, while the left bank’s primary rock (granite and mica-slate) contributes vibrant minerality and "zip."
-
Cool Climate Precision: The region benefits from dramatic diurnal temperature shifts—hot days followed by cool nights—which slow the ripening process and preserve the grape's trademark "white pepper" spice and racy acidity.
The Signature "V" Range
Laurenz V. is famous for its playful, evocative naming convention, designed to make Austrian wine more approachable for international drinkers:
-
Singing: The quintessential "introductory" Grüner. It is fresh, floral, and lively—designed to "sing" on the palate with notes of green apple and citrus.
-
Friendly: A slightly more harmonious and food-friendly style, often sourced from the Kamptal, showing more ripe pear and subtle herb characters.
-
Charming: The estate’s flagship Reserve wine. Sourced from premium sites and aged on the lees for at least 12 months, it is complex, elegant, and built for long-term aging.
-
Forbidden: A daring, off-dry style that balances sweetness with high acidity, making it a perfect match for spicy Asian cuisine.
-
Silver Bullet: A unique, high-intensity expression typically packaged in a 500ml bottle, known for its "piercing" mineral focus and concentrated fruit.
