Viña Don Melchor: The Aristocrat of the Andes
Established as an independent estate under the Viña Concha y Toro umbrella, Don Melchor is Chile’s most iconic Cabernet Sauvignon. Named after the founder of Concha y Toro, the estate’s mission has remained unchanged since its first vintage in 1987: to produce a "First Growth" quality wine that expresses the specific stony terroir of the Puente Alto vineyard.
The Historic 40th Harvest (2026)
As of March 2026, the estate is celebrating a monumental milestone: its 40th consecutive harvest. This anniversary marks four decades of technical refinement under the leadership of CEO and Technical Director Enrique Tirado, who has overseen the wine’s evolution for nearly 30 years. To commemorate the event, the winery has launched the "40 Harvests Experience," allowing collectors to participate in the harvest at the foot of the Andes followed by a gala dinner at the historic Casa Don Melchor.
Terroir: The "Pauillac of Chile"
The Don Melchor vineyard is located on the northern bank of the Maipo River, 650 meters above sea level. This specific site is often compared by critics like Jancis Robinson to Pauillac in Bordeaux due to its gravel-rich, alluvial soils.
-
The 151 Micro-Parcels: The 127-hectare vineyard is divided into seven primary blocks, which are further subdivided into 151 micro-parcels. Each is managed individually to account for subtle differences in drainage and sun exposure.
-
Cool Andean Airflows: The "Andean character" of the wine comes from the cold winds that sweep down the mountains at night, creating a high diurnal temperature range that preserves the grape's natural acidity and floral notes.
The Wine: Complexity and Power
The blend typically consists of roughly 93–98% Cabernet Sauvignon, with small percentages of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot added for aromatic "seasoning" and structural balance.
-
The 2021 Vintage (Wine of the Year): In late 2024 and throughout 2025, the 2021 vintage made history by being named the #1 Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator. It was the first Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon ever to receive this honor, praised for its "vibrancy, energy, and impeccable texture."
-
The 2022 Launch: Officially launched in early 2026, the 2022 vintage has already received high acclaim (97 points from Tim Atkin MW). It is noted for its "coiled, dark-fruited nose" and a "taut, graphite-laden intensity."
Sustainability: The Solar & Sundial Projects
Don Melchor is a leader in "Agroecological" viticulture, treating the vineyard as a living ecosystem.
-
Solar Vineyard (2018): A research project studying the relationship between row orientation and planting density to combat rising temperatures.
-
Sundial Vineyard: A radial planting trial designed to optimize water efficiency and canopy management.
-
Biodiversity Corridors: The estate has integrated native plants and biological corridors to protect Andean wildlife and naturally control pests, contributing to its status as a carbon-neutral vineyard.
