A.J. Adam: The Soul of the Dhron Valley
In the modern landscape of the Mosel, A.J. Adam represents the pinnacle of artisanal, steep-slope winemaking. Established in 2000 when Andreas Adam reclaimed his family’s historic vineyards, the estate has since become a benchmark for the Dhron Valley—a cooler, more secluded tributary of the main Mosel river.
Now run by Andreas and his sister Barbara, the estate focuses on low-intervention viticulture across some of the region's most challenging terrain. Their work is defined by "heroic" farming on vertigo-inducing slopes of grey slate, home to ungrafted vines that are, in some cases, over 60 years old.
The Winemaking Philosophy The Adams follow a minimalist approach in the cellar to ensure the voice of the vineyard remains clear. All wines are fermented naturally with wild yeasts and aged in traditional 1,000-liter oak fuders. This patience results in Rieslings that possess an extraordinary sense of "cut" and crystalline purity.
The Style Whether bone-dry or delicately sweet, A.J. Adam wines are characterized by:
-
High Tension: A signature electric acidity that provides incredible aging potential.
-
Deep Minerality: Intense notes of wet slate, salt, and smoke derived from iron-rich soils.
-
Textural Depth: A savory, herbal complexity that sets them apart from the more tropical styles of the Middle Mosel.
From the Grand Cru Dhroner Hofberg to the rare monopole Häs’chen, these are soulful, transparent wines that capture the raw energy of the slate.
