Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines: The Terroir Architects of Swartland
Founded in 2007 by husband-and-wife team Chris and Andrea Mullineux, this estate has rapidly ascended to become one of the most decorated wineries in South Africa. Based in the rugged Swartland region, the Mullineuxs are leading figures in the "Swartland Revolution," focusing on old-vine heritage and a meticulous, soil-centric approach to winemaking.
The "Single Terroir" Philosophy
The hallmark of Mullineux is their obsession with geology. They believe that the Swartland’s ancient soils are the true authors of the wine. Their "Single Terroir" range features Syrah and Chenin Blanc bottled separately to showcase three distinct soil types:
-
Granite: Sourced from the Paardeberg mountain, these wines are celebrated for their perfumed aromatics, crystalline purity, and nervous acidity.
-
Schist: Sourced from the Kasteelberg, these rocky, shale-based soils produce wines with brooding structure, dark fruit, and savory density.
-
Iron: Found on the rolling hills outside Malmesbury, these "Koffieklip" soils yield wines with intense concentration, grippy tannins, and a distinct savory edge.
-
Quartz: A rarer soil type on the Kasteelberg that produces wines with incredible texture and mid-palate weight balanced by freshness.
The Winemaking Style
The estate follows a "natural, minimalist" path to ensure the soil speaks clearly through the fruit:
-
Heritage Vines: They work primarily with dry-farmed bush vines, many of which are 35 to 80 years old.
-
Minimalist Cellar: They use indigenous yeasts, no acidification, and no enzymes. Fermentation and maturation take place in neutral French oak, foudres, or concrete to avoid masking the terroir with woody flavors.
-
The Signature Blend: Their "Old Vines White" is a benchmark South African blend, dominated by Chenin Blanc and supported by Mediterranean varieties like Clairette Blanche and Viognier.
Prestige and Accolades
Mullineux is the only winery to be named Platter’s South African Winery of the Year five times (2014, 2016, 2019, 2020, and 2023). In 2025, they reached a new global pinnacle, being named the World's Best Rising Star at the prestigious Golden Vines Awards.
