Domaine Huet: The Standard-Bearer of Vouvray
Founded in 1928 by Victor and Gaston Huet, Domaine Huet is widely considered the world’s most iconic producer of Chenin Blanc. Located on the northern banks of the Loire River, the estate has single-handedly defined the potential of Vouvray, crafting age-worthy wines that span from bone-dry to opulently sweet.
The Three Legendary Terroirs
The soul of the domaine lies in its three "Grand Cru" parcels, each located on the prestigious Première Côte (First Slope). The wines are never blended between sites, allowing the specific personality of each terroir to shine:
-
Le Haut-Lieu: The original vineyard, featuring deep brown clay soils. Its wines are typically the most opulent and approachable in their youth, defined by generous fruit and a supple texture.
-
Le Mont: A stony, flint-rich site often debated as the appellation's finest. The wines are famous for their intense minerality, linear focus, and remarkable ability to evolve over several decades.
-
Clos du Bourg: An ancient, walled vineyard with shallow, stony soils over limestone. These wines are powerful and structured, often synthesizing the texture of Haut-Lieu with the mineral drive of Le Mont.
A Legacy of Precision
A pioneer in sustainable farming, Domaine Huet has been certified biodynamic since 1993. Under the current direction of the Hwang family and winemaker Benjamin Joliveau, the estate continues to practice a "zero-intervention" philosophy in the cellar:
-
The Grape: 100% Chenin Blanc.
-
The Methods: Natural ferments in 35-to-50-year-old oak demi-muids, minimal sulfur, and no malolactic fermentation to preserve the grape's signature "knife-edged" acidity.
-
The Range: Depending on the vintage, each vineyard can produce Sec (dry), Demi-Sec (off-dry), or Moelleux (sweet) styles. In exceptional years, they produce the legendary Cuvée Constance, a dessert wine of near-immortality.
