Alheit Vineyards: The Voice of the Cape
Founded in 2011 by husband-and-wife team Chris and Suzaan Alheit, Alheit Vineyards has rapidly ascended to the pinnacle of South African wine. Operating with a "hands-off" philosophy, the Alheits are on a mission to celebrate the Cape’s vinous heritage, focusing almost exclusively on old-vine Chenin Blanc and Sémillon. They believe that great wine is made in the vineyard, and their role in the cellar is simply to let the site speak without interference.
The Philosophy: Old Vines, Dry Farming The Alheits are renowned as "treasure hunters" of the Western Cape. They work with ancient, dry-farmed bush vines—some nearly a century old—scattered across the region’s most dramatic terroirs, from the granite of Paardeberg to the red sands of Skurfberg. These low-yielding, resilient vines produce fruit with an intensity and soul that younger vineyards simply cannot match.
The Winemaking Style In the cellar, the approach is strictly "nothing added, nothing taken away." By utilizing spontaneous fermentations, neutral oak, and skipping fining or filtration, the Alheits ensure that every bottle is a pure, unadulterated reflection of its origin.
The Profile These are not typical fruit-forward whites; they are wines of profound energy, salt-flecked minerality, and incredible textural depth. Often drawing comparisons to the world’s greatest white Burgundies, an Alheit wine is defined by:
-
Bracing Acidity: A signature "electric" tension.
-
Savory Complexity: Notes of thatch, fynbos, and crushed stone.
-
Exceptional Longevity: Built to evolve beautifully over a decade or more.
From their flagship blend Cartology to their rare, site-specific bottlings like Magnetic North and Huilkrans, Alheit Vineyards offers a liquid map of South Africa’s most extraordinary landscapes.
