Villa Maria: The Global Benchmark for New Zealand Wine
Founded in 1961 by Sir George Fistonich with just an acre of vines, Villa Maria has grown into New Zealand’s most awarded winery and a dominant force in the global wine market. Based in Auckland but with massive holdings in Marlborough, Hawke’s Bay, and Gisborne, the winery is a pioneer of the "New Zealand Style"—notably being the first major winery in the world to move 100% to screw caps in 2001.
New Chapter: The Indevin Era (2021–2026)
In 2021, Villa Maria was acquired by Indevin Group, New Zealand’s largest wine producer. As of early 2026, this partnership has reached its stride, combining Villa Maria’s immense brand prestige with Indevin’s massive supply chain and technical resources.
-
Refreshed Identity: In late 2025 and continuing into 2026, Villa Maria unveiled a bold label redesign for its Private Bin and Cellar Selection ranges. The new look features a more prominent "New Zealand" origin statement and a textured, premium finish.
-
Innovation in Format: Responding to modern lifestyle trends, the estate launched its first-ever canned wine range (Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Rosé) in late 2025, bringing premium quality to a more portable format.
Sustainability: A 60-Year Legacy
Villa Maria was a founding member of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and remains at the forefront of eco-conscious viticulture.
-
Organic Leadership: The EarthGarden range, launched recently, is the estate’s flagship 100% organic and vegan-friendly line. It reflects their goal to have 100% of their estate vineyards managed organically by 2030.
-
Lightweighting: As part of the 2026 brand refresh, the winery moved to 390g lightweight glass bottles, significantly reducing carbon emissions during transport.
-
Zero Waste: By the end of 2025, the winery achieved its goal of sending zero waste to landfill from its major processing facilities.
The Wine Portfolio: From Private Bin to Icon
Villa Maria manages a "pyramid" of quality that caters to casual drinkers and high-end collectors alike:
-
Private Bin: The world-famous "entry" range, known for its consistent, fruit-forward expressions of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.
-
Cellar Selection: A step up in complexity, often using more specific regional fruit and subtle oak influence.
-
Reserve Range: Sourced from premium sub-regions like the Awatere Valley. The 2024 Reserve Coastal Awatere Sauvignon Blanc recently won the International Sauvignon Blanc Trophy at the 2026 International Wine Challenge.
-
Single Vineyard Series: Ultra-premium, limited-edition wines (such as Taylors Pass or Seaspray) that showcase the unique "fingerprint" of a specific plot of land.
