Van Volxem: The Renaissance of the Saar
Located in Wiltingen, in the heart of the Saar Valley (a sub-region of the Mosel), Van Volxem is a historic estate that has undergone a spectacular transformation. Originally a Jesuit monastery vineyard in the 16th century and later a world-renowned family estate in the 1900s, it was purchased in 1999 by Roman Niewodniczanski. Roman, an heir to the Bitburger brewery fortune, set out on a mission to restore Saar Riesling to its "Golden Age" status, when these wines were more expensive than the First Growths of Bordeaux.
The "Roman" Revolution
Roman’s vision for Van Volxem is rooted in extreme quality and a return to "natural" winemaking:
-
The New Manufactory: In 2019, the estate opened a state-of-the-art "Weinmanufaktur" on the Wiltinger Schlossberg. It is a masterpiece of sustainable bio-architecture, built from shell limestone and using gravity-flow production. By early 2026, the facility has become one of Germany’s most visited wine destinations, featuring panoramic views of the region's top Crus.
-
Old-Vine Focus: Roman has aggressively acquired historic, steep-slope vineyards. Today, the estate manages roughly 85 hectares, much of it planted with ungrafted vines that are over 100 years old. These ancient roots reach deep into the slate, producing wines with immense concentration and mineral tension.
-
The "Saar Dry" Style: While the Mosel is often associated with sweet wines, Van Volxem is a champion of the dry and "feinherb" (off-dry) style. These wines are characterized by moderate alcohol, high extract, and a silky, "glossy" texture.
Terroir: The Slate Spectrum
The wines are defined by the unique geology of the Saar, primarily Devonian Slate.
-
Blue and Grey Slate: Found in the cooler, wind-swept sites, providing "nervy" acidity and floral aromatics.
-
Red Slate & Volcanic Rhyolite: Found in sites like Goldberg, these soils impart a smoky, spicy, and exotic fruit profile.
The Wine Hierarchy
As a prominent member of the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates), Van Volxem’s wines follow a strict quality pyramid:
-
Saar Riesling (Estate Wine): The benchmark entry point. It is consistently one of the best-value Rieslings in the world—bright, flinty, and incredibly drinkable.
-
VDP.Ortswein (Village Wines): Such as the Wiltinger or Saarburger, which showcase the specific character of individual villages.
-
VDP.Grosse Lage (Grand Cru): The crown jewels, often released as Grosses Gewächs (GG) when dry.
-
Scharzhofberg: The most famous white wine vineyard in Germany. Van Volxem’s Pergentsknopp parcel produces a wine of legendary finesse and "crystalline" purity.
-
Gottesfuss: Home to 130-year-old vines; produces a powerful, earthy, and profound Riesling.
-
Geisberg: A spectacular vineyard that Roman literally brought back from the brink of abandonment; known for its high-toned elegance and racy acid.
