Beni di Batasiolo: The Grandeur of the Langhe
Beni di Batasiolo is one of the largest and most influential family-owned wine estates in Piedmont. Owned by the Dogliani family since 1978, the estate comprises nine distinct "beni" (estates) across the finest wine-growing areas of the Langhe. With over 120 hectares of vineyards, including some of the most coveted Barolo Crus, Batasiolo balances large-scale production with a deep respect for traditional Nebbiolo craftsmanship.
Why This Estate Stands Out
-
The "Beni" Concept: Unlike many producers who source fruit from across the region, Batasiolo’s strength lies in its estate-owned vineyards. This allows them to maintain total control over the quality and character of the grapes from soil to bottle.
-
Barolo Specialists: The estate owns parcels in several legendary Crus, including Bussia, Cerequio, and Brunate. This diversity allows them to showcase the vast range of expressions within the Barolo DOCG, from elegant and floral to powerful and structured.
-
Preserving Tradition: While they utilize modern technology to ensure consistency, their top Barolos are aged in large Slavonian oak casks, following the classic Piedmontese method that allows for slow oxygenation and structural integration.
The Wine Style
Batasiolo wines are known for their classicism and reliability. They offer a transparent look at the noble grapes of Piedmont:
-
Barolo Collection: Their single-vineyard bottlings are the crown jewels, known for complex notes of dried rose, forest floor, and leather, underpinned by firm, age-worthy tannins.
-
Barbera & Dolcetto: Beyond Nebbiolo, they produce vibrant, fruit-driven expressions of Barbera d’Alba and Dolcetto d’Alba that are designed for everyday enjoyment.
-
Moscato d'Asti: For those seeking something lighter, their Moscato is a benchmark for the region—low in alcohol, delicately sparkling, and bursting with fresh peach and sage aromatics.
