Tenuta Il Poggione: The Soul of Montalcino
Located in the rugged, high-altitude landscape of Sant’Angelo in Colle, Tenuta Il Poggione is a cornerstone of Italian winemaking. As one of the original three founders of the Brunello di Montalcino Consortium, the estate has spent over a century defining the standard for Sangiovese excellence.
A Legacy of Tradition
Since the late 19th century, the Franceschi family has curated these historic lands. Today, under the guidance of father-and-son winemakers Fabrizio and Alessandro Bindocci, Il Poggione remains fiercely committed to the "Traditionalist" school of Brunello—prioritizing elegance, structural integrity, and remarkable longevity.
The Terroir and Technique
-
The Vineyards: The estate benefits from a unique microclimate where the cooling breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea meet the protective warmth of Mount Amiata. This prevents the grapes from over-ripening, preserving the vibrant acidity essential for aging.
-
Large Format Oak: In a world of modern "barriques," Il Poggione stays true to tradition by aging their Brunello in large French oak botti (30-50hl). This allows the wine to breathe and soften without masking the pure, earthy fruit of the Sangiovese grape.
-
Sustainability: The estate operates as a diverse ecosystem, integrating olive groves and livestock alongside their vineyards to maintain soil health and biodiversity.
The Flagships
While their Brunello di Montalcino is a global icon—consistently ranked among the top wines in the world—the estate also produces the critically acclaimed "Vigna Paganelli" Riserva, a powerful Rosso di Montalcino, and the innovative Maremma blends.
