Tamnavulin: The Mill on the Hill
Established in 1966 in the rural village of Tomnavoulin, Tamnavulin is often described as the "hidden gem" of Speyside. Its name translates from Gaelic as "mill on the hill," a tribute to the historic 16th-century carding mill that still stands on the distillery grounds. While it was originally built to provide light, fruity malt for the Whyte & Mackay blending house, it has recently emerged as one of the fastest-growing single malt brands in the world.
The Signature Style: Accessible Elegance
Tamnavulin is known for its light, floral, and approachable character. The distillery uses a high cut point during distillation to produce a spirit that is exceptionally smooth, making it a favorite for those who enjoy a "friendly" Speyside dram without overwhelming smoke or peat.
-
Orchard Fruit Profile: Expect a core palate of green apples, pears, and honeyed malt.
-
"Single Malt, Double Flavour": The distillery’s motto refers to their expertise in dual maturation. Almost every expression begins in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels before being finished in a secondary cask to add layers of complexity.
The "Double Cask" & Wine Cask Innovation
Tamnavulin has carved out a niche by experimenting with various wine cask finishes, offering high-quality complexity at an accessible price point.
-
Double Cask: The flagship expression, finished in sherry butts. it offers notes of toffee apple, ginger, and dried orange.
-
Sherry Cask Edition: Matured in three different types of Oloroso sherry casks, resulting in a richer profile of vanilla, banana, and caramelized orange.
-
Red Wine Cask Series: A standout range where the spirit is finished in French Cabernet Sauvignon, German Pinot Noir, or Spanish Grenache casks. These bring unique red-berry sweetness and silky tannins to the classic Speyside malt.
-
White Wine Cask Series: Includes a Sauvignon Blanc finish, which enhances the distillery's natural citrus and herbal notes with a crisp, zingy edge.
Sustainability and Recognition
Tamnavulin is not only growing in popularity but also in its commitment to the environment and its community.
-
Dark Sky Compliant: In late 2025, Tamnavulin became the first distillery to achieve 100% dark sky lighting compliance, helping to protect the incredible night skies of the Cairngorms Dark Sky Park.
-
Production Team of the Year: The distillery’s operational excellence was recognized at the Icons of Whisky Scotland 2026 awards, where the team took home the top prize for their craftsmanship and consistency.
