James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com
Pure cherry fruit here, reminiscent of kirsch, with orange peel and an ashy, mineral backbone to it, almost like cracked flint or gunpowder. Similar aromas and flavors on both the nose and on the palate. Medium- to full-bodied, really tense and firm with chalky tannins and a lingering crushed granite and rock sensation on the palate. Seashells, too. Long.
The Rosso Feudo di Mezzo is the largest cru in the appellation and comes from a 1.5 hectare parcel. The vines range from 50-80 years old and only 5500 bottles are made. Nerello Mascalese makes up 98% of the blend with Nerello Cappuccio at 2%. It spends 16-18 months in French oak barriques and tonneaux before bottling. This wine is always the most open and ready to drink with aromas of cedar spice and red berries and silky tannins.
