James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com
A gorgeous nose of red cherry, ripe strawberry, orange, rose petal, sage and bay leaf. Medium-to full-bodied with lovely depth and fine-tuned intensity. A subtle note of ash comes through, but the palate comes across as fresh and juicy, with succulent red fruit and berries. From organically grown grapes. Open already.
The Rosso Feudo di Mezzo is the largest cru in the appellation and comes from a 1.5 hectare parcel. The vines range from 50-80 years old and only 5500 bottles are made. Nerello Mascalese makes up 98% of the blend with Nerello Cappuccio at 2%. It spends 16-18 months in French oak barriques and tonneaux before bottling. This wine is always the most open and ready to drink with aromas of cedar spice and red berries and silky tannins.
