Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate

The 2022 Spätburgunder Neuenahrer Sonnenberg GG has lush fruit of ripe cherries and blackberries, plus cold smoke and slate. Generous, elegant and powerful on the palate yet transparent and fresh, this has plenty of nerve and vitality and a stimulating salty finish. This is another great 2022 Pinot from the Näkel sisters. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden in August 2024.

The name Sonnenberg speaks for itself. 95% of the vineyard is on steep slopes, ideally facing south, offering the best conditions for Pinot Noir.  Due to its southern exposure and favorable slope, the Sonnenberg in Bad Neuenahr, located at 100-150 meters above sea level, is one of the preferred sites, benefiting from high levels of sunlight and a favorable microclimate. The soil is a skeletal conglomerate of greywacke to greywacke slate, mixed with  clayey components, ranging from slope loam to loess and loess loam. A nearly 5-meter-high  escarpment in the lower part of the vineyard clearly indicates the soil type. Scientific studies have identified this as the warmest location in the entire Ahr Valley. The predominant grape variety, Pinot Noir, produces powerful, voluminous wines that retain a fruity, elegant character thanks to the stony soil.
