Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate
The 2025 Sandown Marsanne Roussanne is a new wine for me, perhaps a new wine for Clarendon Hills, too, and it strikes me as a very sensible wine to make. McLaren Vale is emerging as Australia's "Little Rhône"—not to make an odious comparison between the two vastly different regions, this is only to say that the varieties gaining the most traction and attention and being made the most successfully in McLaren Vale are largely Rhône varieties. And all power to them, as it works tremendously well. Here, the 2025 Sandown Marsanne Roussanne leads with yellow flowers and tropical fruits, peppercorns, star anise and shaved fennel. There are subtle nuances of white chocolate on the palate, but the wine is driven by intense, caper-brine-like acidity and firm phenolic structure. This is an engaging wine: it is fresh yet powerful and also savory. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam.
