Menthol, pine cones, ink and licorice to the dark currant fruit. Tannins are tight and fine-grained on the medium- to full-bodied palate. Pretty in the finish. Would rate higher if there was a little more fruit intensity on the center palate.
Château La Commanderie is one of those hidden gems of Saint-Estèphe, which has managed to remain reasonable while in the prestigious appellations of the Médoc, many have become inaccessible.
In 1956, Gabriel Meffre, then a nurseryman, fell in love with the region and purchased his first hectares of vines near Château Montrose. In 1961, he gifted his vineyard with a magnificent 18th-century château. Claude Meffre succeeded his father in 1996 and devoted himself fully to the management and development of the estate. He has maintained the Cru Bourgeois Classification, which has been in effect since 1932.
