This has impressive depth and complexity with an array of red and dark berries mixed with dark chocolate, ground spices and burnt orange peel. All of this fragrance sits on a bed of smoked, ashy, dark stone and wet asphalt undertones. Full and deep with very fine, silky tannins. So much tension and force here. It goes on for minutes, ending with a seamless, textural finish. From ancient, pre-phylloxera vines. Try now, but this will age beautifully.
In Calderara Sottana, in front and to the right of our cellar, in a vineyard of about four hectares there are two parcels that have survived the phylloxera. Considering that the phylloxera arrived on Etna in 1881, the vines are therefore over 140 years old, and are ungrafted.
