Edward Ragg, The Wine Adovate
Deep purple in appearance, the 2014 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon reveals dark, brooding black fruit marked by cassis, black cherry and bramble with distinct secondary notes of clove, toast and smoke (less vanilla here). There is no overt pyrazine character in this abundantly ripe, warmer-climate Cabernet. On the palate, this wine is full-bodied, with very coating but not overly extracted tannins, lifted by bright acidity and a decent core of ripe black fruit flanked by secondary new oak notes. Tending toward longer length, it wears its higher alcohol relatively well and shows decent concentration throughout. While this wine does not have quite the same aging potential as Canaan’s 2014 Reserve Merlot or 2014 Reserve Syrah, it does show plenty of varietal character in what is clearly a strong vintage for Canaan.
