Description
Clos St. Antonin was purchased by the Sabon family, owners of Domaine de la Janasse, in 2014. Vintage 2015 was the first vintage made by the family at this lieu-dit that has been around since the 18th century. Isabelle Sabon runs the 15 hectare domaine which is situated in the commune of Jonquières between Châteauneuf du Pape and Gigondas in the Rhône wine region.
The Côtes du Rhône Plan de Dieu is a blend of Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah. The wine has around 10% whole clusters retained and is fermented in concrete tanks. The Mourvedre and Syrah are aged in barrels while the Grenache is aged in foudres for 12 months prior to its release. A complex wine coming from one of the best Côtes du Rhône villages. The wine has aromas of ripe blackberry, cherry and licorice. It’s richer and more concentrated than the larger Côtes du Rhône appellation with depth and length on the finish. This Côtes du Rhône can age for at least 5-10 years. The Clos St. Antonin Châteauneuf du Pape is made from 100% Grenache with 40-50% whole cluster fermentation depending on the vintage. The grapes are subject to cold maceration for 2-4 days before fermentation in concrete vats. The wine is aged in foudres for 12 months before release. The nose is lifted with fresh aromas of blackcherry, blueberry and hints of rose. On the palate the tannins are tightly knit with balanced acidity and a lingering finish.
